Description
A Foundational Mineral
Iodine is an essential trace mineral required for the production of thyroid hormones, which influence metabolism, energy, and many core functions in the body.
Today, due to depleted soils, modern diets, and environmental exposures, many individuals are not getting adequate iodine. In fact, a large percentage of the population may be insufficient in this critical mineral.
When iodine intake is low, the body’s ability to maintain balance across multiple systems can be impacted.

It’s estimated that many individuals in the U.S. may not be reaching optimal iodine intake through diet alone.
Iodine is a foundational mineral required for healthy thyroid function, which plays a central role in regulating metabolism, energy production, and overall hormonal balance. When iodine levels are insufficient, the body may have a harder time maintaining these essential processes.
During times of increased demand—such as puberty, pregnancy, and environmental stressors (such as halogens including; fluoride, bromide, and chloride) the body’s need for iodine may rise.
Often referred to as a key regulator within the endocrine system, iodine supports the body’s natural ability to produce thyroid hormones that help coordinate communication between multiple systems throughout the body.
Getting Started with Lugol’s Iodine
If you’re new to iodine supplementation, it’s best to begin with a low amount and gradually increase as your body adjusts. This can look like 1 pill, every other day or even 1 pill, every 3 days. Iodine is water soluble and will not build up.
Some individuals may notice temporary changes such as mild headache or fatigue when first introducing iodine. These responses are often associated with the body adapting to optimal iodine intake and supporting its natural detoxification pathways—particularly involving compounds known as halogens (such as bromide, fluoride, and chlorine), which compete with iodine in the body.
For best results, take iodine earlier in the morning with a protein-rich meal to support absorption and energy levels. Because iodine plays a role in metabolic activity, many people prefer to avoid taking it in the evening.
*Personally, I take one Lugol’s Iodine Plus capsule (12.5 mg) daily. Since incorporating this into my routine in 2018, I’ve experienced meaningful improvements in hormone balance and thyroid function (Hashimoto’s is in full remission). Symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue, irritability, and cycle irregularities have resolved. In my experience, iodine can be a missing piece for many individuals.
